Health & Wellness Director // Fairwinds West Hills
“As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the heart, mind, soul, and body of our patients, their families, and ourselves. They may forget your name, but they will never forget how you made them feel.“ – Maya Angelou
Since childhood, I was impressed and grateful to the Baby Boomers generation of Americans, that were going to countries like mine, in Peru, to help us with food, clothes and showing us that there are people that care for less fortunate others. When I came to America, I felt blessed to have the opportunity to serve them, to practice nursing, and with an open heart and arms to them. To always make the best effort to be part of their journal and take care of them the same way somebody is taking care of my own mother back home.
I started with Fairwinds West Hills as a full time Resident Assistant Overnight in 2001 while I was finishing my nursing school to become an LVN. I then left in 2005 to pursue other avenues like teaching at the local vocation school. Over a span of 6 years I helped at Fairwinds filling in doing assessments and others things needed. In 2011, I was assisting after another Health & Wellness Director change, and the General Manager then asked me to stay as the Director. With no hesitation I accepted and I have been the Health & Wellness Director for the last 8 years.
I feel I am very fortunate to have the support of my peers and being a part of a team that I consider my family. I appreciate the support from management and the Home Office leadership. I have worked for other senior facilities but I didn’t feel they had a sense of purpose until I came to work at Fairwinds. I love what I do and I enjoy every day coming to work. I am able to encourage my team to pursue their dreams in the nursing and healthcare industry. It is an honor to know that we are a stepping stone for their future. I hope that they will remember us and will be grateful for what I was able to teach them.
I was given the opportunity to put smiles on residents faces, to change lives and to have a purpose. And I have fun doing it!!!
